Drupal Imagemagick

  • ImageMagick is a heavy dependency that might not be present everywhere, while GD is more often available. As for the drupal specific question, I don't know how it integrates with either, so just take my advice as a deployment consideration.
  • ImageMagick runs on Windows 10 (x86 & x64), Windows 8 (x86 & x64), Windows 7 (x86 & x64), Windows Server 2012, Windows Vista (x86 & x64) with Service Pack 2, Windows Server 2008 (x86 & x64) with Service Pack 2, and Windows Server 2008 R2 (x64).

Use ImageMagick® to create, edit, compose, or convert digital images. It can read and write images in a variety of formats (over 200) including PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP, HEIC, SVG, PDF, DPX, EXR and TIFF. ImageMagick can resize, flip, mirror, rotate, distort, shear and transform images, adjust image colors, apply various special effects, or draw text, lines, polygons, ellipses and Bézier curves.

Allows to use ImageMagick or GraphicsMagick as image toolkit for Image API in Drupal 7 and 8 core. This integration is based on invoking the convert binary through shell access to process images. The Imagick module is an alternative toolkit module that uses the Imagick PHP extension instead.

ImageMagick is free software delivered as a ready-to-run binary distribution or as source code that you may use, copy, modify, and distribute in both open and proprietary applications. It is distributed under a derived Apache 2.0 license.


ImageMagick utilizes multiple computational threads to increase performance and can read, process, or write mega-, giga-, or tera-pixel image sizes.

The current release is ImageMagick 7.0.11-11. It runs on Linux, Windows, Mac Os X, iOS, Android OS, and others.
