Jupyter Notebook Python 3

In this post, we will look at what to do if Python 3 is installed in your Windows environment but it is not appearing in your Jupyter Notebook under New.

Python workshops use the current version of Python (currently 3.7 or 3.8). We recommend the Anaconda distribution of Python 3. Anaconda includes Python, Jupyter Notebook, Jupyter Lab, and most of the Python packages used in our workshops. Our Python Fundamentals workshop uses Jupyter Lab, which comes with the Anaconda distribution. Anaconda conveniently installs Python, the Jupyter Notebook, and other commonly used packages for scientific computing and data science. Use the following installation steps: Download Anaconda. We recommend downloading Anaconda’s latest Python 3 version (currently Python 3.7).

To fix this, open your command prompt and type:

Now start Juypter Notebook using the command:

You will then see Python 3 showing as an option:

While Jupyter runs code in many programming languages, Python is a requirement (Python 3.3 or greater, or Python 2.7) for installing the Jupyter Notebook itself.

Installing Jupyter using Anaconda

We strongly recommend installing Python and Jupyter using the Anaconda Distribution, which includes Python, the Jupyter Notebook, and other commonly used packages for scientific computing and data science.

Jupyter Notebook Tutorial

First, download Anaconda. We recommend downloading Anaconda’s latest Python 3 version.

Second, install the version of Anaconda which you downloaded, following the instructions on the download page.

Congratulations, you have installed Jupyter Notebook! To run the notebook, run the following command at the Terminal (Mac/Linux) or Command Prompt (Windows):

As an existing or experienced Python user, you may wish to install Jupyter using Python’s package manager, pip, instead of Anaconda.

If you have Python 3 installed (which we recommended):
