'It is cruel, you know, that music should be so beautiful. It has the beauty of loneliness & of pain: of strength & freedom. The beauty of disappointment & never-satisfied love. The cruel beauty of nature, & everlasting beauty of monotony.'

Le Nozze Di Figaro Translation

Le Nozze di Figaro, by Wolfgang-Amadeus Mozart, is one of the most cherished works in opera history. This opera concerns many themes such as social class, some resonance of the French Revolution, and many other 18th-century concerns. Many people find that at its essence, this opera is about what it means to love somebody, or what it means to love someone who doesn’t love you. It’s about the human condition; human emotions and aspirations have not changed, and these situations are ones that most people can connect with. For the last several decades, feminist musicology has denounced negative depictions of female characters in the opera history. Opera is an old establishment, and thus revives the perspectives of past centuries. So, musicians and music-lovers like me may ask themselves what messages they are receiving from these old-fashioned works and whether those messages are acceptable in the modern world. Otherwise, they can carry on a culture of violence and oppression. Le Nozze di Figaro is one…show more content…
But Susanna, the Countess, and the other ladies of Figaro still live in a man’s world. The title of this opera is called The Marriage of Figaro for goodness sake, even though Figaro is definitely not the main character. Perhaps, that’s why they always needed to be a step or two ahead. Furthermore, all the women are very strong characters and have learned from life. Because of their experiences, they know what they want and also how to get it. They control the scene: knowing how to escape, how to deal with things, what to hide and what to show. Not every action or plan works immediately, but in the end they flourish, making the women in Le Nozze di Figaro some of Mozart’s best-defined and complex
