Overview

85 ( Munich State Opera) In addition to the operas listed above, Strauss composed several other vocal dramatic works and incidental music, and prepared new versions of others, as follows: Romeo and Juliet (incidental music) ( Munich National Theatre). The German composer Richard Strauss (1864–1949) was prolific and long-lived, writing 16 operas from 1892 up until his death in 1949. Among the major composers of the late 19th- and early 20th-century, he was the most prominent successor to the German musical tradition of Johannes Brahms and Richard Wagner, and crucial in inaugurating the musical style of Modernism.

Soprano Nina Stemme brought down the house when she headlined the premiere of visionary director Patrice Chéreau’s 2016 staging of Elektra. Now she returns to Strauss’s unhinged heroine, opposite one of today’s most in-demand artists, soprano Lise Davidsen, as her sister, Chrysothemis. Sir Donald Runnicles is on the podium for one of opera’s most blistering scores, leading a cast that also includes mezzo-soprano Michaela Schuster as Klytämnestra, tenor Stefan Vinke as Aegisth, and bass-baritone Greer Grimsley as Orest.

German Classical composer, born June 11, 1864, in Munich, died September 8, 1949, in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. He is best known for his composition 'Also sprach Zarathustra' and the operas 'Salome' and 'Elektra'. His father was the musician Franz Strauss.

Co-production of the Metropolitan Opera, New York; Teatro all Scala, Milan; the Festival d’Aix-en Provence; the Finnish National Opera, Helsinki; the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Berlin; and the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona
