Dealing with Zoom ‘n Pan in Camtasia
I’ve been using this program for a while, and one thing I’d just been ignoring up until recently was that sometimes when I was going over and editing a video, the program would decide to zoom in at certain places and stay zoomed in without provocation. This automatic zoom is a sneaky and annoying thing, especially when you want to combine videos, but thankfully there’s an easy way to prevent/fix it. And, when you actually need it, it can be quite helpful.
If you want to immediately make sure this never happens, make sure that you check the second resizing option on the project settings box that pops up when you drag a video down to the timeline. This is… very easy to overlook.

Doing that will keep zoom ‘n pan out unless you choose it yourself.
But, uh-oh! While filming a game, I forgot to cut the emulator out of the frame.
Well, I could just re-film and fix the dimensions there, but let’s see what I can fix what I can with zoom ‘n pan. This feature is located on the left under the edit box which is in the task list.
This box should pop up, showing you video with a green border around it. You can change the dimensions by changing the % on the Scale slider, but it’s probably better to do it yourself. You can move the green border by clicking and dragging on the black boxes on the diagonal and side edges, and you can move the entire box by clicking and dragging anywhere inside. However…
As seen by the dashed-line border, you can only move in diagonally and not straight up/down/left/right. That is kind of a pain, so its a good thing that you can fix it!
scroll a down a little and click on the “advanced” arrow to drop this menu down, although you might have to scroll up and then back down for it to show up. I already changed this, but the “maintain aspect ratio” box is automatically checked. Un-check it, and then you can simply move the dimensions left and right or up and down without having it expanded diagonally as well. As you edit your dimensions in the submenu on the left, the main video will change to show what it will look like. Let’s see:
Much better. Sometimes you might want to have the zoom actually in the video, but for this case we don’t, so go to the Duration scroll bar next to the Scale one, and drag it all the way to the left. Now take a look at the time-line.
There will be a blue diamond somewhere: That’s the zoom. Drag it all the way to the left of the time-line so that the video will start with the video automatically edited. Again, this is not something you will always want to do, but only for this specific project.
And finally, it’s fixed. If you ever want to get rid of the zoom, click on the blue diamond to go back to the zoom ‘n pan screen, and then click the red x below the scale and duration sliders.
And that’s it.
